Meet the Therapist: Frank Fan, Physiotherapist

Meet the Therapist: Frank Fan, Physiotherapist

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I’m originally from Henan province. I came to Shanghai to study at Shanghai University of Sport and received my bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy/Sports Rehabilitation. I then went on to complete a master’s degree in Kinesiology/Rehabilitation Science from Shanghai Fudan University. I’ve gained many years of experience working in local hospitals doing a wide array of rehabilitation and physical therapy. In addition to working with patients, I participate in clinical research.

What are some of your primary specialties and modalities?

I have a strong background in sports rehabilitation. Much of my work at the hospital is post-surgery and injury rehabilitation, specifically helping people after knee or hip surgery or fractures. We also treat a lot of pain, particularly spine issues and pain in the neck and back. I specialize in manual therapy for musculoskeletal disorders and work with mobilization techniques, deep tissue massage and manipulation. I often employ muscle energy technique (MET).

What are some of the primary conditions you treat?

Many patients come in for acute or chronic pain, whether it is from a new injury, an old injury, or daily/sports stress. Doctors will also refer their patients for physiotherapy after surgery. Some of the most common conditions I treat include: spinal disc herniation, sciatica, muscle strain, plantar fasciitis, shoulder impingement syndrome, patellar tendinitis, tennis elbow, and ankle sprains. And, of course, back and neck pain makes up a large portion of the practice.

In rehabilitation, patients are commonly referred after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus injury/surgery, Achilles tendon reconstruction, or a fracture. With my background in kinesiology and sports rehabilitation, I can help anyone from the casual sports enthusiast to the serious athlete stay healthy and recuperate from injuries or wear and tear.
