Five Springtime TCM Remedies Every Shanghai Expat Needs to Know

Five Springtime TCM Remedies Every Shanghai Expat Needs to Know

Spring is a period of awakening and growth, for nature and for the body. Spring is the season of the rising yang (active) energy.

During spring, the liver, which regulates the flow of Qi, plays an important role. It is responsible for releasing the Qi which has been stored during the winter. You may find yourself feeling more agitated or having angry outbursts. Additionally, headaches and neck/shoulder pain are common in spring as the Qi flows upwards. This transition time can also lead to fatigue and the body is particularly vulnerable to outside pathogens.

TCM has long understood these seasonal changes and identified natural remedies to strengthen the body and help it adjust. Here are some great TCM remedies for helping the body during spring:

Yu Ping Feng San –玉屏風散

This remedy boosts the immune system and helps fight spring allergies.

Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan –补中益气片

A Qi booster, which works to tonify the qi and relieve spring fatigue. It can be taken by anyone who feels tired and run down.

Xiao Yao Wan –逍遥片

This reduces anger and agitation related to the liver fire often experienced during this time of growth. It is also calming for the stomach.

Shuang Huang Lian Kou Fu Ye –双黄连口服液

When you feel symptoms of a cold coming on such as a scratchy or sore throat, take these right away to prevent getting sick (or help reduce the severity if you’re already showing symptoms). This remedy is highly effective in fighting oncoming colds and our family always takes it at the first signs of a cold.

Xiang Lian Pian –香连丸

A handy remedy for those digestive troubles we all run into from time to time, especially if we travel a lot. Helps with stomach ache, belly pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and any kind of digestive infection or illness.

All of these remedies are available at the Body & Soul pharmacy. Click here to contact us. Our practitioners also offer customized treatment plans for your health concerns. We provide holistic care from various disciplines, bringing together the best solutions to help you get and stay well.
