Introducing Matthew Stevens, Medical Massage Therapist and Chronic Injury Specialist
I lived and worked in New Zealand for several years. After that, I was pondering a move home, but my interest in martial arts took me to Japan.I spent three years there training and competing in mixed martial arts and continuing my work with many contacts I met through the gyms where I trained. I worked with a number of athletes there and back home in the U.K.
Working alongside many experienced doctors and therapists in different disciplines has helped broaden my exposure to a wide array of concepts and techniques. I continue to learn more about health and rehabilitation medicine and have received graduate diplomas in reiki, cranial osteopathy and massage therapy.
B&S: What brought you to Shanghai?
M.S: My wife is from Shanghai. We met in Japan, got married 15 years ago and have a 10 year-old son. We lived in Shanghai for a couple years about 10 years ago, and then returned to my home town in England. We were ready for a change from the small town life so we came back to Shanghai three years ago. I am fortunate to join the interdisciplinary team at Body & Soul. I have a strong interest in Chinese traditions such as TCM and enjoy working with a group that brings together the best of eastern and western medicine.
B&S: What are your specializations?
M.S: I specialize in treating chronic conditions and injuries. I particularly like the challenge of treating chronic injuries, which can be quite complex and require the holistic knowledge and experience I have gained over the years. My work with athletes has helped further develop my techniques for assessing the body. The treatment process is thoroughly grounded in evidence-based medicine, biomechanics, and physiology…but it is also an art since the body can be unpredictable and so many interrelated factors are at play.
