CUPPING?
Cupping is a Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy which consists of placing cups on the skin to create suction in order to influence the blood flow. It is widely used to disperse wind, cold and stagnation of phlegm. The suction is most often created by heat or with manual devices. Cups are applied on selected body parts to remove blood stasis and restore a free flow of blood.
THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE
Patients should not feel pain during cupping. They will notice the suction sensation from the cups. Patients usually feel more relaxed with reduced muscle tension immediately, and continue to experience other benefits. Cupping is often combined with other TCM treatments, such as acupuncture or herbal medicine. Due to the accumulation of blood in a localized area, cupping usually results in circular bruises – where the cups have been applied – which disappear in 3 to 5 days.
