Can Reiki Help You Live a Healthier, Happier Life in Shanghai? Shanghai Reiki FAQs: Understanding Reiki’s Role in Well-Being By Gabriel Salazar, Shanghai Reiki Practitioner

Reiki Definition and History

Reiki is an ancient practice of energy healing. Rei means universal life force (the energy of the universe or higher power) and ki is the vital energy (known as qi in Chinese). The healing practice of reiki is credited to a Japanese practitioner, Dr. Mikao Usui, who brought in techniques and knowledge from various Eastern systems. He opened his first school for the practice in the 1920s. Reiki practice has spread throughout the world and is often featured in magazines and on TV.

In a reiki session, the practitioner uses his hands to help the energy flow throughout the body (look for my upcoming article describing the client experience in reiki sessions).

Well-Being in Shanghai: When Can Reiki Help?

Reiki is not a medical treatment per se, but it can help with many medical conditions as well as overall health and well-being. It is an ideal complement to other medical treatments (Western and TCM) for enhanced results. Reiki essentially gives the client the tools to use his/her own energy for healing. The body has everything inside it needs to heal and take care of itself. By channeling the life force and the energy of the universe, reiki promotes a natural healing process. Therefore, reiki sessions can do wonders before and after surgery.

Reiki is especially good for relaxation, stress relief and energy. Shanghai expats lead busy, stressful lives. They have a lot to manage with hectic work schedules, cultural adjustment, practicalities and Shanghai’s environmental stressors. Reiki is perfect for stress relief (and related illnesses like high blood pressure) and reducing anxiety and fears. It helps people suffering from depression, anxiety and fatigue. If one is feeling weak, run down and tired, reiki can give him/her a boost. With improved energy flow, fighting off toxins and staying healthy is much easier.

Reiki can help people who are struggling with overeating, smoking and addictions. Energy work is useful for issues like chronic pain, joint problems, cancer, insomnia, panic attacks, and diabetes. After giving birth, reiki can also revitalize the new mother so she can heal and regain balance more quickly.

Who Can Reiki Help?

Reiki can be used on adults, children, infants and even animals. Children’s sessions are shorter and play is integrated into the therapy. Animals and kids have a natural consciousness; they’re fully connected with life energy so it’s easy to see direct, immediate results with reiki.

Reiki is not only useful when ill, but as a means to stay healthy and live a better life in harmony with the surrounding energy. It can boost creativity and awareness.

There are no side effects to reiki since it is a completely natural process. However, if a person has a broken bone, he/she should get it treated by a medical professional prior to reiki so as not to spur the healing process before the bone is properly set. And, while reiki can be very beneficial before, during and after pregnancy, expectant mothers should get approval from their doctor first.
