Chiropractic Care in Shanghai
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a branch of osteopathic cranial work, popularized by John Upledger D.O.. The cranial concept was first developed by an osteopath called William Garner Sutherland in the early 20th century. Since Sutherland, there have been many practitioners like Upledger who have further developed the theory and other branches of the practice.
Who needs a chiropractor?
A typical patient of mine works 10 hours/day and may sit in a car for a long commute. So this could be up to 12 hours/day of sitting. They get little exercise and may have a poor diet. They are full of aches and pains. In today’s modern, high-tech world, even those who try to stay healthy with exercise and diet often suffer pain and overuse injuries.
The most common patient concerns are low back pain, neck and shoulder pain. Neck and shoulder problems are on the rise as people spend more time on the computer. In recent years, thumb and hand issues are becoming as prevalent as the smartphones that cause them. Many of us barely put our phones down all day.
I also create custom orthotics for patients (measuring and fitting in Shanghai, to get them made in Hong Kong). When the feet are rolled in or out (over or under pronation), it causes all kinds of issues like bunions, crimping of the toes, thickness of the skin and poor posture, back, knee and hip pain. Parents often notice these issues in their children when they seem especially “clumsy” or have uneven wear on their shoes. The inserts can prevent a lot of long-term problems, so I’m glad to be able to bring high quality orthotics to patients in Shanghai.
A chiropractor’s healthy lifestyle tips:
• Get some exercise every day. A 30-minute walk is enough to help your body recover and reduce stiffness.
• Every 30 minutes, take at least 30 seconds to get up from your seat. Simply stand, move around a bit and look out a window into the distance. This relaxes the body, gets the blood flowing and also rests the eyes.
• Try to stretch or move briefly in the opposite direction of your standard position (so, for example, if you are constantly using the computer mouse with your right arm, stretch that arm behind your back or rotate the shoulder).
• Consider ways to break patterns or minimize overuse. Even cutting back on using the phone for a short period each day or adding a walk in at lunch can make a big difference.
